The alpha Sabine coefficient (αw) is a value between 0 and 1 with αw 0 indicating total sound reflection and 1 indicating total sound absorption.

When used in a roller shade application, the sound absorption ratings are as follows:

At low frequencies:(around 200hz), the fabric absorption is about 0.21 αw.
At medium frequencies: (around 500hz), the fabric absorbs up to half of the incidental sound energy for roller shades at 0.5 αw.
At high frequencies:(above 2000hz) the fabric absorption is about 0.55 to 0.65 αw.

The specific values depends on the gap behind the fabric. The following table shows the sound absorption characteristics for a roller shade with a 175mm gap compared to other common building materials:
